Name: Scott & Kathy Powers
Year: 1939
Make: Studebaker pickup
Original Cost: $12,500 for the body kit and donor truck
Cost to build: Till counting
Name of the ride: XXXessive 39
How long did it take to build? 8 years and counting
Reason for this ride: Believe it or not it started as a daily driver for Kathy. It had the original drive train and suspension. When she didn’t like driving it every day Scott added the air ride then the supercharged SBC. Now it’s a weekend toy that gets 7 miles to the gallon.
Who helped? Mark Richman Machine shop and Bryan Walker of Lost Cause.
How long have you been in the hobby? Too long, started in the 60’s
Club Affiliation: Nope
Engine: A 94 Chevy LT1 block started the build. A forged set of pistons, rods, and crank completed the lower end. The aluminum heads were swapped for a set of lower compression ones to keep the boost lower so we could drive the truck regularly without issues. The Weiand 671 blower was topped with a pair of Holley 650 carbs prepped by Quick Fuel Systems out of Bowling Green, KY.
Suspension: The suspension is converted to air ride using Firestone 2500 in the front and 2600s in the rear. 3/8” line connects the bags to Thompson compressors which are controlled by a set of Blowjak manual valves. The suspension was done almost 10 years ago.
External Body Mods: The body came from the original builders of this body kit, Master Street Rods of Tempe, AZ. It is one of only 5 of the short bed versions ever made. The donor truck is an 89 GMC S15.
Trunk/Bed: The custom hardwood floor was added, but we use this truck to haul so it’s not too pretty.
Interior: The interior has been completely revamped. The stock door panels, dash, and headliner were trashed. The dash came from a company called Unique Customs out of Canada. It is an one off version of the Pontiac Grand Am. The Autometer gauges fill the holes in the dash. The door panels were homemade as well as the headliner. The center console was built in the driveway which holds the B&M shifter. The seats are from R1 racing and the racing harnesses come from Scuggins of Clarksville, TN.
Audio/Video: A stereo equipment is on the short side. When you crank this beast up the tunes can hardly be heard. There is a JVC head unit connected to a 10 pak CD changer. Pioneer speakers are mounted in the console and door panels.
Paint: The first paint job was on the truck over 7 years; we wanted something different so we went to Bryan Walker of Lost Cause. Bryan lives in Sparta, TN and is one of the most creative painters in the sport. If you look at the detail of this paint job it will blow you away. Every time you look at it you will find something you didn’t see the last visit.
Tires/wheels: Wheels are Boyd 18X8 on the front covered with Nitto 235/35/20s on the rear 20X10.
